What Is a Cavapoo?

The Cavapoo also spelled Cavoodle is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Miniature or Toy Poodle. The result is a small companion dog that takes the Cavalier's affectionate, people-oriented nature and pairs it with the Poodle's intelligence and low-shedding coat.

Cavapoos were bred for one job: company. They are not guard dogs, not working dogs, and not high-drive athletes. They want to be near you, they learn quickly because they want to please, and they adapt to a one-bedroom apartment as readily as to a house with a yard. That combination is why the Cavapoo has been our most-requested breed for three consecutive years.

Because they are a cross, Cavapoos vary. A puppy from a Toy Poodle sire will finish smaller and curlier than one from a Miniature Poodle sire. We tell you the parents' sizes and coat types up front so you can predict what you are actually getting.

Is a Cavapoo Right for You?

A Cavapoo is a strong match if…

You live in an apartment or condo and need a dog that stays small and quiet.

Someone in the household is sensitive to dander and you want a low-shedding coat.

You want a first dog — Cavapoos are forgiving of novice training mistakes.

You have children and want a small dog that is sturdy and even-tempered.

You work from home, or someone is around most of the day.

You want a dog that travels well and is welcome in most pet-friendly buildings.

Consider another breed if…

The dog would be alone eight to ten hours a day — Cavapoos are prone to separation anxiety.

You are not prepared for professional grooming every six to eight weeks.

You want a running or hiking partner that can cover serious distance.

You want a guard dog. A Cavapoo will greet an intruder warmly.

You need a fully predictable adult size — crosses vary more than purebreds.

We ask more questions than most sellers before we place a puppy about pets, children, work schedules and your home. If a Cavapoo isn't the right fit, we'll tell you and suggest a breed that is.

Caring for a Cavapoo

Grooming

Brush three to four times a week to prevent matting behind the ears and under the legs, and book a professional groom every six to eight weeks. In NYC, budget $85–$120 per visit.

Exercise

Two 20–30 minute walks a day plus indoor play is enough for an adult Cavapoo. Puppies need far less — roughly five minutes per month of age, twice daily.

Training

Cavapoos are highly food-motivated and typically house-train within four to six weeks with a consistent crate routine. Build up short absences from week one to prevent separation anxiety.

Feeding

Three meals a day until four months, then two. A 15 lb adult Cavapoo eats roughly ¾ to 1 cup of quality small-breed kibble daily. Keep them lean.

Health, Testing and Our 30-Day Guarantee

Cavapoos are generally healthy and live 12–15 years, but responsible breeding matters. Here is what
we require of every breeder we work with, and what we guarantee to you.

What we require from breeders
  • A veterinary health certificate for every puppy before it ships
  • Age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming, documented
  • Compliance with all applicable state breeding laws
  • Parent screening for cardiac, patellar luxation, eye, and hip conditions
  • No puppy leaves its litter before eight weeks
  • Unannounced site visits, which we conduct periodically

Consider another breed if…

Every Cavapoo from Puppy Guys is covered for 30 days against congenital health defects. One condition applies, and we state it plainly:

You must have your puppy examined by a licensed veterinarian within 7 days of purchase.

We recommend booking the vet appointment before your puppy arrives. It protects you, and it is the single most common reason a guarantee claim fails elsewhere.

Puppy Guys does not work with puppy mills. We work only with breeders we have visited, and we will name the state a puppy comes from before you pay a deposit.
